What is the NCCCO?
The NCCCO was formed in January 1995 as a non-profit organization to develop effective performance standards for safe crane operation to assist all segments of general industry and construction.
By providing a thorough, independent assessment of operator knowledge and skills, the NCCCO aims to enhance lifting equipment safety, reduce workplace risk, improve performance records, stimulate training, and give due recognition to the professional skill of crane operation.
The establishment of the NCCCO was the culmination of almost ten years of continuous work by representatives of all industries that use cranes. In essence, the NCCCO program was developed by industry for industry, and continues to be supported by it.
Do I need an NCCCO Certification?
Certain states now require the NCCCO Operator Certification for Mobile Crane Operators working in their state. In the west they include California, Hawaii, Montana*, Nevada, Utah, and in effect as of January 1, 2010 - Washington.
* NCCCO Cetification is not REQUIRED in Montana, but receprocity is granted as follows: Montana Law 50-76-113. Recognition of national certification. (1) The department shall issue a first-class or second-class crane and hoist engineer's license to any individual who is certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators as having qualifications that are at least substantially equivalent to the requirements of this state for licensing as a first-class or second-class crane and hoist engineer.
If your present or planned crane operations include these states, then you need NCCCO certification.
We also offer crane operator qualification classes for states NOT requiring NCCCO certification.

What is the NCCCO certification process?
The NCCCO requires all candidates pass a mobile crane operator CORE exam. You must then select one (or more) of the four mobile crane specialty written examinations which meet the classification of the crane upon which you wish to be certified. These exams can only be administered by an accredited examiner.
Part 1: Core written exam (mandatory for all)
Part 2: Written exam on specific crane type. (Any exams chosen can be taken on the same day)
Small Telescopic (fixed cab)
Large Telescopic (swing cab)
Lattice Boom Crawler
Lattice Boom Truck
Part 3: The NCCCO practical (hands-on) examination is again a specialty examination on the specific type of crane upon which you wish to be certified:
Small Telescopic (fixed cab)
Large Telescopic (swing cab)
Lattice Boom Cranes
If I pass the Large Telescopic written or practical exam, does it also qualify me to operate a Small Telescopic crane as well?
Sorry, no. You must take and pass both the written and practical exams for both types of cranes.
Can't I just walk in and pass the written tests?
After preparing all of our instructors to successfully pass all five of these examinations, we highly recommend a preparatory training class even for the most experienced operators. The core examination covers all four specialty types of cranes.
How difficult is the practical (hands-on) examination?
You would be well served by arranging for a practice day in advance of the practical examination, to better prepare you to successfully pass the NCCCO practical (hands-on) exam.
What is included in the OVERTON Safety Training NCCCO program?
Our Program is five days in length provided via open enrollment programs scheduled in various cities through Coast Crane Company, selected AGC or ABC chapters, or the Smart Training Center. This program (or any component of it) can also be held and hosted onsite at your location if requested (some minimums apply).
We start with three days of classroom Training
Instruction and preparatory program. Course and curriculum is designed to prepare you for the NCCCO written examinations by teaching theory, application, concepts, and specific load charts (for specialty exams) as well as to learn the laws, standards and regulations for the safe operation of Mobile Cranes.
The program Includes our professional trainer, course materials, a 250 page comprehensive student workbook, practice review tests and a certificate of completion.
On the fourth day you take the NCCCO Written Examinations
Includes core and specialty exams. Scheduled and administered thru IAI. We handle the required advance registration and application process.
On the fifth day you take the NCCCO Practical (hands-on) Examinations
Scheduled and administered by OST. Hosted at various sites either in conjunction with our program, free standing or even onsite on your cranes. (Onsite examinations require advance scheduling)
Are Boom Trucks included in the NCCCO requirements?
Yes they are. Since they are "simpler" to operate compared to their larger siblings, we also offer a shorter four-day program specifically designed for Boom Truck Operators.
Our four-day boom truck program includes all the components of the five-day program except the load chart training is limited to the boom truck (fixed cab) and includes only the core and small telescopic (fixed cab) written exams.
Two and a half days of classroom Training
Same as mobile crane program but only covers boom truck load charts to prepare for the small telescopic (fixed cab) specialty written exam.
Third day (afternoon) NCCCO Written Examinations
Same as mobile crane but includes only the core and small telescopic (fixed cab) exams.
Fourth Day NCCCO Practical Exam
Same as mobile crane but only includes the small telescopic (fixed cab) exam.
My company has many crane operators. Can I utilize an in-house trainer to prepare my operators for the NCCCO written exams?
Yes, we offer a four-day train-the-trainer program, held at our Oregon location, designed for companies desiring to provide their own internal preparatory training to help their operators successfully pass the NCCCO written examinations using our curriculum and training materials for their employees.
It includes an instruction program for your in-house trainer to qualify them to utilize our training program at your location for your employees. It features instruction on being an effective trainer, coverage of all curriculum, a color-keyed trainers manual, trainers tote bag, prep quizzes and all materials and handbooks to train ten operators. Additional student handbooks are available at an additional cost. Call us toll free at (866) 531-0403 for details.
How is OVERTON Safety Training qualified to offer these courses?
Over the past 17 years we have developed our own professional training programs and curriculum, and have trained and qualified thousands of Hoisting & Rigging professionals across the United States.
We provide a quality training program and experience that consistently exceed the client's expectations.
Who are your instructors?
Recognized as expert facilitators, our classroom instructors are all training professionals with years of experience providing safety training. They have passed all five NCCCO Mobile Crane Written Exams and are Certified NCCCO Crane Operators. All NCCCO practical (hands-on) examinations will be provided by members of our staff who are all Accredited NCCCO practical examiners.
Why should I choose OVERTON Safety Training over other companies which offer an NCCCO preparation course for less money or time?
Don't be fooled by some training programs which photocopy the federal law, provide a brief overview and feel that going over the sample test questions will prepare you for the NCCCO exams and aid you in becoming a safe, competent and qualified crane operator.
We have been developing professional training course curriculum for over 17 years. Many of our programs are utilized by various trade unions, trade associations and literally hundreds of large and small employers.
Passing a test is one thing. Understanding the theory, concepts and being able to duplicate and applying them is something different! We provide the whole package!
Our written examination preparation course is custom written and designed to teach the theory behind the law, learn with concept and solution application; build and develop safe lift plans, study the required topics and take multiple practice review tests which will all 'teach' them. Successfully completing our comprehensive program will greatly assist in preparing candidates to take the NCCCO Mobile Crane written core and specialty exams.
